Leaflets explaining the safe and respectful handling of dogs were distributed

A two day tented clinic was held in May to assist the work of this welfare organisation set up in Kopan on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

A household survey, dog census and advance publicity were provided by Community Dog Welfare, and they dewormed 90 dogs ahead of our arrival.

The dogs that were spayed were all free-roaming and were a mix of owned, community and stray. Most of the strays were under the care of members of the community so they could be returned after recovery. Those few dogs that were completely stray were held at CDW's shelter for a few days until fit for release. One of our vets stayed behind for a few days to monitor the condition of all the patients.

The following week a mass anti-rabies vaccination camp was held at CDW, staffed by local vets and using vaccines donated by HART and by the Himalayan College of Agricultural Sciences & Technology.

A great example of how organisations and individuals can work together for the benefit of the street-dogs.

Staff Training

In June 2011 HART's two Vets and one of our Vet Technicians attended a ten-day course at the Indian Training Centre, Ooty, India.

This allowed them to learn the latest surgical techniques and procedures for veterinary work in the street-dog field.

Vehicle

HART's Mahindra Bolero Pickup

It was necessary to replace the vehicle we had previously used as this had become unreliable - a problem in view of the amount of travelling the HART staff are required to do.

Sponsorship from HAT(UK) and concerned individual donors made this possible and we extend our grateful thanks to them all

Volunteers

We welcomed a number of volunteers during the last few months, beginning with Dr Joanna Milne in August 2011.

The Vet and author Dr Russell Lyon joined us in September for a month of intense activity as the monsoon lifted.

In addition to assisting HART, Dr Clare Muir will carry out a research project on equine intestinal worms starting in late October after her return from a month volunteering in Ethiopia. This will involve collaboration from AHTCS who are also based in Pokhara and work nationally with equines.

Could volunteering be for you....?
