If you do not want to have responsibility for many litters of pups who will require feeding, care and
homing, it is sensible to ensure that your dog cannot reproduce. This involves a surgical operation
called castration in male dogs and spaying in female dogs. There are additional benefits to controlling
your dogs fertility. Male dogs are less aggressive and so less likely to sustain wounds from fights
which may kill them. Female dogs also live longer healthier lives as their bodies do not have to
undergo repeated pregnancies and lactations.
1. Do not attempt to stop your dog reproducing by giving her Depo Provera or any other
contraceptive made for humans. These drugs can cause a disease called pyometra
which can kill female dogs.
2. Bring your dog to the HART clinic for its operation. Telephone first to make
an appointment. The HART vets carry out hundreds of these operations
and the operation will take place in a clean and well equipped
operating theatre.
3. You will be able to remain with your dog as it comes round
from anaesthetic if you want to. The HART staff
will monitor recovery and you can take your dog home
the same day with care instructions provided there are
no complications. If you prefer you can collect your
dog after its operation.
4. Follow the post operative care instructions carefully
as your dog needs some time to recover.
You can ring the HART vets if you have any
queries or any problems.
5. There are currently no safe long term ways of stopping
dogs reproducing by the use of drugs. As soon as there are
HART will investigate their use.
6. Arrange to have your dog neutered as
early as possible in its life. Do not wait
for a female dog to have a litter of pups.

WHAT TO DO
INTRODUCTION
WHY NEUTER YOUR DOG?
Neutering your dog will bring
benefits to you, your dog and to the
wider community who will not need
to deal with litter after litter of
unwanted pups. Neutered animals
generally live longer, healthier
lives and are more settled and calm.
It only takes one female and one male dog, to produce
with their offspring, 67,000 puppies in 6 years
